Mike the Headless Chicken Festival

I recently received the honor of being chosen as the official event photographer for Fruita CO Parks and Rec department.    This means I will take photos for the class schedules and for promotion of city events.  I am really excited about this.   To me, it also means going to fun festivals, concerts and other events, hanging out with people who are having fun, and doing what I love.   What could be better?  Well, maybe a tiara (I'm working on that).

This past weekend was the Mike the Headless Chicken Festival.    It honors a story most "fowl" (I know, I know).   Mike was meant to be Sunday dinner in 1945, but survived his trip to the chopping block.  He lived for 18 months afterward with no head.   According to http://www.miketheheadlesschicken.org/, this is why:

It was determined that ax blade had missed the jugular vein and a clot had prevented Mike from bleeding to death. Although most of his head was in a jar, most of his brain stem and one ear was left on his body. Since most of a chicken's reflex actions are controlled by the brain stem Mike was able to remain quite healthy.

Mike became a local celebrity.   We are in the 11th year of celebrating his untimely survival.     Here are some photos from the event:

The lady on the right has lived in Fruita for 90+ years.

Lawnmower races:  They had to take potatoes from one bucket to the other.

Yes, those are pearls on that chicken.

The egg toss.

Boing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just love her!

There was a car show around the circle and along Aspen Street.

Petting zoo (with chickens, goats, rabbits and cats)

Jonah Hepp with his funky chicken.

The weather turned out lovely on Saturday evening.

Someone got all dressed up for the festival.

Saturday night, starting to pack up.

I love these pictures. You captured so much in the people's faces. What a strange event... Never heard of this, though I feel like someone probably told me about it and I likely tuned it out.
Thanks, Cambria! Yes, it is one of the weirdest festivals ever. I love it actually just because of that. It was fun. They have a peep and wing eating contest and a guy dressed like a chicken wandering around. Maya rode the ponies about 400 times and we all ate terrible food. A good time was had by all. :)
